1) Measure the floor area to determine the quantity required.

Take wastage into consideration. Allow for a couple of square metres more to avoid coming up short in case a new supply of floorboards should differ too strongly in colour & pattern.

Check that the opposite wall is totally parallel: if not, when laying the first row of floorboards, you will need to insert a corrective strip in the laying line along the wall. Set an expansion gap of 10-15mm on the four sides of the floor, between the floorboards and the wall by using spacers. Make sure that this expansion gap runs equally the entire length. Start the first row of floorboards in the left-hand corner with the groove facing the wall.

Measure the floor area to determine the quantity required.

2) With the final board of the first row, tilt the right-hand board over to the left and so that the underside of the board is uppermost and the tongue on the cross-cut is pointing at the board you fitted last.

Mark the correct length, taking into account the expansion gap - saw off and fit in place.

The flooring must be nice and parallel to the wall. If the wall isn't straight then make sure the first row is adapted accordingly. Then lay the first row in its final position, (by nailing or gluing) taking account of the expansion joint.

Preferably begin on the most visible side of the room and end on the opposite side where the floor may be covered or is out of sight.

With the final board of the first row, tilt the right-hand board over to the left and so that the underside of the board is uppermost and the tongue on the cross-cut is pointing at the board you fitted last.
